Advice & Coaching - Job Search in a Tough Economy

By Andy Chan, MBA '88, Assistant Dean and Director of the MBA Career Management Center and Mercy Eyadiel, Director of Alumni Career Services Finding a job in this economy can be tough. We'd like to offer some information and perspective to help you strategically and proactively execute a successful job search. Recent History According to Wikipedia, the United States has experienced recessions about one per decade since 1797 (economic statistics were not gathered before this time). In the last 50 years, there have been six recessions, each lasting one to two years. Regretfully, we will experience two recessions during this decade. The Recruiter View From our conversations with recruiters, they have a lot of uncertainty about the future and little visibility as to when this negative spiral will end. As a result, many organizations are taking conservative positions regarding their people resources. Layoffs and hiring delays or freezes are occurring. Recruiting plans are on hold. At the same time, other firms are still planning to hire experienced, qualified professionals because they have been less affected by the downturn or they want to continue to fill their leadership pipeline (sometimes even while laying off more experienced employees). Most firms have indicated that the hiring 'bar' will be extremely high this year. The Implications The competition for jobs will be fierce: Fewer jobs available. More applicants in the market. Interviews may drag on and offer decisions may be slower: Employers have more candidates to process. Employers are less concerned about losing candidates to other offers. Employers prefer to not make expense commitments far in the future. Career switching will be more challenging due to more applicants received with direct experience. Firms are less willing to take risks. What You Can Do Embrace the market reality. More than ever, it's critical to be flexible and open, and to develop a wide range of acceptable options. Look for job opportunities where your skills can easily be transferrable. At a recent CEO panel at the GSB, panelists advised job seekers to highlight experiences where they saved the company money and generated revenue. Clarify your goals. First, determine if your goals are realistic. How much of a career change is possible? How risky is it to start a company? What are the risks of passing on job opportunities that may not be the right fit longer-term? Talk to a career coach about your specific situation because they can offer an objective, experienced perspective (see resource section below). Then, be specific about your target job or role. And have a sizable list of organizations that most interest you. Without this clarity of target job/role and potential organizations, you can waste a lot of time in the search process. Know your value. Your skills and accomplishments are your greatest assets to an employer. Taking time to reflect on what you bring to the table can be energizing and it will help you present yourself more confidently. To help you with this process, take a few minutes to complete the self-assessment questionnaire. Network, network, network. Networking is the key to success in any job market and gives candidates a unique, competitive advantage. Why? Because alumni are able to find or develop new opportunities where they can make significant impact and be valued accordingly. This is particularly important for career changers because they can develop relationships with executives who can envision creative employment possibilities and solutions and have greater appreciation for the career changer's potential. Use professional networking sites like LinkedIn and Facebook to connect with GSB alumni and other business professionals. To join the official GSB alumni group on LinkedIn, go to: https://alumni.gsb.stanford.edu/gsblinkedin.html. To join GSB's Facebook group, go to: http://alumni.gsb.stanford.edu/facebook Keep in mind that networking is a relationship-building and information-gathering process, and getting a job is the result of many conversations and interactions. See networking strategies and tips. Prepare for the next job. You may have to take a job now that is not exactly what you were hoping for. Continue to meet with former colleagues and alumni to build your network and increase your knowledge in targeted areas of interest. Take classes, attend conferences, or join a professional organization. And continue to do so even after you start your new job. Leverage Alumni Career Services. There are many career resources provided by the GSB to help you with your job search. Career Coaching Sessions offered at a reduced rate ($75 subsidized by the GSB). Career and Life Vision is one of the most powerful tools for strategically managing your career and life. Unfortunately, most people do not have a clear vision for their career or life, and many have never even thought about it. It's not surprising that the majority of working professionals are not completely fulfilled and satisfied with their jobs or careers.

You will leave this workshop with specific personal insights and action steps to move forward in making your vision real.

Networking and Informational Interviewing By Andy Chan The majority of job seekers find their job by networking. It's hard to believe that with thousands of jobs posted to online job boards worldwide, there are even more jobs available by networking. Strange, but true.
Tools & Resources

Online Social Networks Are Havens for Job Hunters By Jeanette Borzo WSJ Career Journal Online When engineer Zarik Boghossian felt tapped out at his job, he turned to an employment firm to help him find a new one. But after paying $5,000, he says he got little more than outdated contacts, job leads that were widely available on the Internet and a 300-page "customized" document with standard career advice. So when a colleague invited him to join LinkedIn.com, an online social network where professionals can meet peers and make career contacts, he gave it a try. Within a month of joining in April, Mr. Boghossian spotted an intriguing profile -- Afshin Behnia, chief executive of Mitratech Inc. He met with this new contact and landed a job as vice president of engineering at the Los Angeles technology and services company. Details

Advising & Coaching

Don't Slow Your Job Search During the Holiday Season By Perri Capell WSJ Career Journal Online It's a myth that hiring slows down between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. Many offers are made during the holiday season as managers try to fill jobs before their budgets expire. Even though you may have heard otherwise, don't drop out of the market over the holidays. By staying active, you'll have an advantage over candidates who think nothing happens in December and who take a break until January. Details
