Mail Groups

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did I receive a bounced message after sending an email to a group?
You must be subscribed to the group to send email to the group.  To join, go to the mail group form (requires login).  If you're already subscribed, be sure to send from the same email address that you used when you subscribed.

How do I change the email address where I receive mail group messages?
Unsubscribe from your groups using the steps below and re-subscribe with your new address using the mail group form GSB Alumni Only. Alumni Services login required..

How can I find out which mail groups I'm subscribed to?
If you recently subscribed to a new mail group, you received a welcome message, containing a password and link to a page where you can change your options. Go to that page, enter your password, and at the bottom of the page, click the button "List my other subscriptions." A page will open listing all of the mail groups you subscribed to using the same email address.

- Or -

Email alumni_admin@gsb.stanford.edu and include the email address you used to subscribe and the name of one of the mail groups you know you're subscribed to. Using this information, we will send you two emails, one containing a password and the other containing instructions that will allow you to find your other mail groups.

Mail Group Usage Policy

Access to the directory is a privilege and The Stanford Business School reserves the right to revoke your access if you do not abide by the below policy.

  1. Send information that services you directly, not friends and family. Please do not give out the mail group addresses to anyone other than a Stanford GSB alum.
  2. Don't put the mail group email addresses in your email address book. Many viruses propagate themselves by sending an email to all entries in the infected computer's email address book.
  3. To post a message to a mail group, you must be subscribed to the group. You can subscribe and unsubscribe to mail groups by using the mail group form GSB Alumni Only. Alumni Services login required..
  4. If you receive a message which you feel violates the mail group usage guidelines, please forward the message to alumni_admin@gsb.stanford.edu.
    DON'T FLAME
(criticize another member of the list) on the mail group.
  5. When replying to mail group postings, please DO NOT HIT REPLY ALL unless you intend to send your message to the entire mail group.
  6. Do not send attachments. Copy the text of a document into the body of your email. The mail group system automatically strips all attachments before sending your email to the group.
  7. Include your full name, program, and class year at the beginning of your message, and make your subject line as descriptive as possible.
  8. If you ask for recommendations, please encourage people to respond directly to you, and offer to summarize responses and send the summary to the list. This will help keep list traffic to a minimum.
  9. The Bay Area, New York, Venture Capital, Entrepreneurs, and Funding mail groups are moderated by the Alumni office.

Mail Group Descriptions and Usage Guidelines

We've adopted the following usage guidelines for the mail groups, based on feedback from alumni subscribers, to keep them a valuable resource for members.

Class Groups
Class mail group postings should be limited to your 3-class group (your class, and the classes ahead and behind). Class mail groups can determine their own code of conduct. Presumably you know everyone on your class distribution list so you can agree as to what is appropriate for your list.

Chapter/Geographical Groups
Chapter and geographical mail groups can be used to communicate chapter events and networking opportunities, local alumni business news, and other subjects of interest to local alumni. Members of chapter groups will receive communications from their SBSAA Chapter Officer. It is NOT appropriate for job postings by recruiters/headhunters, or commercial announcements about services or expertise you have to offer. Please use Business News for commercial announcements.

Industry Groups & Business Advice/Networking
Industry specific lists are great for "I'm looking for a resource for..... does anyone have an idea" and public service kind of announcements (e.g. speakers, etc.), but NOT appropriate for job postings by recruiters/headhunters, or commercial announcements about services or expertise you have to offer. Please use Business News for commercial announcements.  If your inquiry is not appropriate for any of these industry groups, use Business Advice/Networking.

Bay Area Groups
Alumni-Bay Area can be used for local alumni events and industry networking opportunities, volunteer opportunities, and discussions regarding professional development services. For all other communications to Bay Area alumni, use Bay Area-Classifieds. Bay Area Rentals and Real Estate has been expanded to include real estate sales. If you have job opportunities use the free GSB Job Board.

Career Groups
The Get Resumes mail group is designed for communicating potential applicants. Please copy the resume into the body of the email, do not send attachments. In addition, there is a CMC Career Pathways monthly e-newsletter available to alumni only. See E-newsletter Subscription Form GSB Alumni Only. Alumni Services login required.

Business News
Use this list to announce business announcements, your services or expertise, such as "We've just launched a new business, please check us out on the website" or "If anyone is looking for an OB Consultant, please call me."

Special Interest Groups
Special interest groups are great for networking with alumni with similar interests. Again these groups are NOT appropriate for job postings by recruiters/headhunters, or commercial announcements about services or expertise you have to offer. Please use Business News for this purpose. If your inquiry is not appropriate for any of these groups, use Business Advice/Networking.

How to Join a Group or Unsubscribe

To Join

  1. Browse the Mail Group Descriptions and Usage Guidelines to select the groups you want to join.
  2. Complete the Mail Group Subscription Form and check the "subscribe" button for each group you wish to subscribe to. Scroll to the bottom of the page, and press the "submit" button. Your subscription will be processed within one business day. Not available for current students.

To Unsubscribe

Choose the Option that Best Describes You

  • I Want to Unsubscribe from Select Mail Groups
If you want to unsubscribe from select groups go to Mail Group Subscription Form and enter the email address you used to subscribe to the mail group. Choose the groups you want be removed from, and select the "submit" button at the bottom of the page.
  • I Don't Know What Mail Groups I Am On
If you don't know what groups you are currently subscribed to and you want to remove an email from ALL the mail group lists go to
Unsubscribe Form - for All Groups and enter the email address you want removed from ALL the mail groups. Select the "Remove from All Mail Groups" button.
  • I Want to Change My Email Subscribed to a Group
Updating your email address in the Alumni Directory does not automatically update your address in our mail groups. The Alumni Directory and the University Mail Group Service do not exchange information, so updates to an address in one database does not update it in the other.

If your email address has changed since you originally subscribed, you will need to
    • Unsubscribe from the mail group(s), as described above, using the email address you want to remove.
    • Re-join the mail group(s), as described above, using your new address.
    • Remember to go into your Profile to update your email address in the Alumni Directory

How to Send Messages to a Group

  1. Using the Mail Group Descriptions and Usage Guidelines, find the appropriate mail group for your message.
  2. Compose an email message to the mail group email address (requires login).  Please include your name, program and class year and be sure to send the email from the address that you used when you subscribed.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the overwhelming problem of viruses arriving via email, the GSB will never send attachments through email. Please note that our mail group system will automatically strip out any attachments before sending your email to the group.
