Do I Need to "Friend" an Alum before I Can Contact Them?
No, everyone in the alumni directory is approachable. The "friend" tool is only for building out your personal network. It simplifies keeping in contact with the alumni you interact with most often. You can also see how you are connected to other alums through your friends, making in easier to make a connection.
When searching the directory, each alum has a "Send a Message" link next to their entry which allows you to send a quick message to anyone. You can also contact them via email or phone if they have chosen to show the community this info.
Remember when using the directory to follow the Directory Usage Policy.
Who has access to the GSB alumni directories?
All GSB alumni, current students, and staff are privileged to view the contact information you choose to share in the GSB alumni directories. You have the option to set (very granularly) what information shows to the GSB community. Terms of Service
How do I set my privacy and preferences?
Choose the "My Profile" link at the top of any GSB alumni web page, or from the left navigation. Then select the "Privacy/Preferences" link in the left-hand navigation under "My Profile." Here you can choose to set your preferences globally or by individual elements.

Can I show my information in the GSB alumni directories, but hide the information in the Stanford University directories?
Yes, you can show as much or as little as you want to the GSB community and/or the rest of the University community. Choose the "My Profile" link at the top of any GSB alumni web page, or from the left navigation. Then select the "Privacy/Preferences" link in the left-hand navigation under "My Profile." Here choose to set your preferences globally and select "Customize settings." Under "Sites/Schools" you have the option to only show to the GSB community. Remember you can also choose these options for specific information.

If I update my mailing address in the directory, will this update my address for the magazine and other GSB correspondence?
Yes, address changes made in "My Profile" are entered into the GSB and University's central alumni database.
I updated my profile, when will these changes take effect?
The changes will show in your profile immediately, but the behaviors of the community vary in when these changes will take effect. Such as:
- I change my home address from Palo Alto, CA to Los Angeles - the People near me to reflect LA will show overnight
- If I add my dorm or change it - My fellow dormmates will notice this overnight.
- If I change my social class year - I would see my "new set" of classmates change overnight.
- If I add friends - my people of interest change will change weekly, currently on Sundays.
