About the Arbuckle Award

Sponsored annually by the Stanford Business School Alumni Association, the Ernest C. Arbuckle Award recognizes excellence in the field of management leadership. The award was created in 1968 in honor of the late Business School dean whose name it bears. Recipients demonstrate a commitment to both managerial excellence and to addressing the changing needs of society.

About Richard E. Rainwater

Richard E. Rainwater has been an independent investor since 1986. From 1970 to July 1986, he served as the chief investment advisor to the Bass family, whose overall wealth increased dramatically during his tenure. During that time, Mr. Rainwater was principally responsible for numerous major corporate and real estate acquisitions and dispositions.

Upon beginning his independent investment activities, he founded ENSCO International Incorporated, an oil field service and offshore drilling company, in December 1986. Additionally, in June 1988, he co-founded Columbia Hospital Corporation, and in March 1989 he participated in a management-led buyout of HCA-Hospital Corporation of America. In November 1992, Mr. Rainwater co-founded Mid Ocean Limited, a provider of casualty re-insurance.

Mr. Rainwater began purchasing Texas real estate in 1990 and, in 1994 formed Crescent Real Estate Equities, Inc.; he served as the Chairman of the Board from its inception until August 2007 when the company was sold. In February 1994, he assisted in the merger of Columbia Hospital Corporation and HCA-Hospital Corporation of America that created Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corporation. Mr. Rainwater established the nonprofit Real School Gardens in 2003; its mission is to deepen children's connection to nature. Currently the organization sponsors gardens at 54 elementary schools in Texas, the majority in Fort Worth. Mr. Rainwater is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University.
